Markets continued in an upward direction for maincrop Rooster this week as steady volumes moved despite the warm weather. The reaction in the market is associated with a delay in early crops caused by bad weather, delays in maincrop planting and less than anticipated remaining stocks of old crop. This has had the effect of extending the old season by up to two weeks. The same situation and in some areas more severe cases exists in the UK. Early harvest has begun in the south of the country with small yields and ground clearing very fast the availability of this crop is going to be well behind market demand and is currently trading very strongly. This trend is expected to continue.

There has been a dramatic turnaround in markets in the last week as Rooster prices rose by as much as €50/tonne with some growers. This is still a long way off achieving cost of production this season but is a welcome improvement form the last 10 months trading. Reports are coming in of significant losses in early crops and where losses are not evident due to frost there are significant delays in emergence and growth of all crops planted to date due to the cold and wet weather. The same situation in the UK where an added issue relating to localised flooding in certain areas, could delay the early season by 2 to 4 weeks but more significantly could affect volumes and yield of all early season and early maincrop varieties.

A very positive weeks trading in all parts of the country has lifted potato prices for the first time since June last year. This is very positive news for growers as prices have traded below cost all season. The unseasonal weather has had a far reaching effect on supply by reducing yield potential of early planted crops, delaying harvest of early planted crops, delaying planting of a significant percentage of maincrop and has also increased sales for remaining growers in the supply chain supplying from cold storage. This trend is expected to continue from now to the new season with already a more positive outlook for next season.
